Mold making refers to the production of molds required for the manufacture of cast metal or plastic parts. For end products that are produced in large quantities, steel mold making—which is closely related to toolmaking—is typically used.

Some parts are nitrided to achieve the desired component properties. Nitriding provides the components with improved corrosion protection as well as high wear and fatigue resistance.
Nitriding is the only hardening process that completely eliminates process-induced distortion of the component. Since the workpieces remain bare metal during the hardening process, the amount of machining required after hardening is reduced to a minimum.
