Soft annealing
Targeted heat treatment for improved machinability
Soft annealing is a heat treatment process used to selectively soften metallic materials and optimally prepare them for subsequent processing steps. Reducing the hardness facilitates forming and machining processes, reduces processing forces, and extends tool life.
Soft annealing can significantly improve machinability, particularly in steels with a carbon content of more than 0.4 percent by weight. This process is often used prior to operations such as rolling, wire drawing, stamping, or machining when a material condition that is as ductile and low-stress as possible is required.
The annealing temperature depends on the material and is typically between 650 and800 °C for steel. During heat treatment, the components are heated in a controlled inert gas atmosphere to prevent surface defects such as oxidation or decarburization. The material is then held at this temperature for several hours before being cooled slowly and in a controlled manner.
In soft annealing, the microstructure is adjusted to reduce hardness without specifically developing new strength properties. Generally, no significant microstructural transformation occurs; rather, a microstructural adjustment takes place that results in improved formability and sliding properties in the material.
In addition to steel materials, soft annealing is also suitable for copper and brass alloys, particularly for restoring formability after work hardening. This process is not intended as a preparatory step for induction hardening, as different metallurgical conditions are required for that purpose.

Your Questions, Answered
We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you better understand our services.
What is the purpose of soft annealing?
The purpose of soft annealing is to make materials as soft and machinable as possible so that subsequent manufacturing steps can be carried out more efficiently, with less damage to the material, and more cost-effectively.
For which materials is soft annealing suitable?
This process is primarily used for high-carbon steels. It is also suitable for copper and brass alloys, particularly after forming processes.
What temperatures are used in soft annealing?
For steel, the annealing temperature is typically between 650 and 800 °C. The exact temperature is determined based on the material and the desired final condition.
Why is soft annealing performed in an inert atmosphere?
The inert gas atmosphere protects the component surface from oxidation and decarburization, ensuring consistent quality and reproducible results.
How long does a soft annealing process take?
The duration of the process depends on the material, component dimensions, and target specifications. Typically, annealing takes anywhere from several hours to several days, including controlled cooling.
Can soft annealing be performed before induction hardening?
No, soft annealing is not suitable as a pretreatment for induction hardening, as different metallurgical conditions are required for that process.
