Various technologies are used in this process—ranging from nitriding to inert-gas hardening to case hardening. In the latter process, the surface layer of the component is enriched with carbon. This gives it a hard, wear-resistant surface, while the core remains tough. Precisely defined areas of the component can be hardened by covering the other surfaces with a hardening protection paste. This process results in high-performance components with outstanding properties.
