Surgical instruments include all medical instruments used in surgery. Since surgical instruments are inserted into open wounds, they are primarily made of stainless steel, titanium, or tantalum.
These technically sophisticated products are vacuum-hardened and then deep-frozen. After hardening, depending on the material used, a mostly undesirable unstable phase—residual austenite—remains in the workpiece. The targeted transformation of this phase by cryogenic treatment of the component serves to achieve the desired material properties. In addition, this process prevents microstructural changes during use.
