HTR components play a key role not only in the premier class of auto racing but also in motorcycle racing, in the form of brake discs, clutch baskets, camshafts, and crankshafts. The components are vacuum-hardened, case-hardened, or plasma-nitrided. In plasma nitriding, the surface layer of a workpiece is enriched with nitrogen in an ionized gas atmosphere. This results in clean component surfaces with significantly improved resistance to abrasion and wear.
