Deep freezing

After heat treatment, depending on the material used, an unstable phase—usually undesirable—remains in the workpiece: residual austenite.

The targeted transformation of this phase through a combination of conventional heat treatment techniques and deep freezing is often the most technically and economically sound method for achieving the desired material properties and preventing microstructural changes during use.

Hardening Through Controlled Cooling

Our state-of-the-art freezing system allows us to implement controlled temperature profiles.

The controlled cooling of the steel after hardening to a temperature of -70°C to -150°C results in the transformation of the residual austenite into martensite, which is responsible for the steel’s hardness. This makes the component exceptionally hard and dimensionally stable, ensuring it remains unchanged during use. This process is state-of-the-art control system at HTR. The turnaround time for the entire treatment process is hardly affected by the holding time of approximately one hour.

OTHER PROCEDURES

vacuum hardening

Hardening

Hardening is a heat treatment process used to increase the hardness and strength of metals, such as steel. Most materials consist of different crystal lattice structures, each with distinct properties. Hardening is a process in which these structures are altered to achieve the desired properties.

gas nitriding

Nitriding

Nitriding is a thermochemical process in which nitrogen diffuses into the surface of a metal workpiece to improve its mechanical and physical properties. The process is typically carried out at elevated temperatures in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere.
